Why Hong Kong can work as a micro-trip

Hong Kong is roughly 11–13 hours of flying from Europe (about 12 hours from Europe on average, and about 12 hours 45 minutes from London). That rules out a plain weekend, but the MTR Airport Express reaches Central in about 24 minutes, so you don't lose much time on arrival. Plan for four or five days.

What to do in Hong Kong

Victoria Peak and the harbour. The Peak Tram is a funicular running from Central to Victoria Peak and has operated since 1888. The Star Ferry crosses Victoria Harbour, and the Avenue of Stars is on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

Lantau Island. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car connects Tung Chung with Ngong Ping. It is 5.7 km long and the ride takes about 25 minutes. The Tian Tan Buddha stands 260 steps up from Ngong Ping Village, near Po Lin Monastery.

Hiking. Dragon's Back is a ridge walk on Hong Kong Island with views of Shek O, Tai Tam and the outer islands. To reach it, take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan (exit A1) and then bus 9, about 30 minutes.

Islands. Lamma Island ferries leave from Central Pier 4 and take about 20–30 minutes to Yung Shue Wan. Fast ferries from Central to Cheung Chau take roughly 35–40 minutes.

Markets. The Ladies' Market in Mong Kok is a street market where vendors expect cash.

Add Macau as a day trip

Macau is about 55 minutes to an hour from Hong Kong by fast ferry, with departures throughout the day. The Historic Centre of Macau was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. It mixes Portuguese, Chinese and other architecture. The facade of the Ruins of St. Paul's is all that remains of a complex destroyed by fire in 1835, and it is carved with Jesuit saints, Chinese dragons and lotus flowers. For Portuguese egg tarts, Lord Stow's bakery is in Coloane Village. You do not need to gamble to enjoy the trip.

Macau is a separate immigration territory, so you clear border control when you enter and when you come back.
