Why fly from Munich?

Munich Airport (MUC) is Lufthansa's second-biggest hub after Frankfurt, giving you access to their entire Star Alliance network. But budget travellers benefit too: easyJet, Eurowings, and Ryanair all compete here, and Transavia adds seasonal routes. Lufthansa's dominance means they often price-match budget carriers to protect market share.

The airport is 28km northeast of the city. The S-Bahn (S1 or S8) takes 40 minutes to Marienplatz (€13 or included in daily group tickets). The Lufthansa Express Bus to Hauptbahnhof takes 45 minutes (€13). Skip taxis (€70+).

Munich's proximity to Austria, Switzerland, and Italy means ridiculously short flights south. Innsbruck is barely 30 minutes. Milan is an hour. Rome is 1h20. Combined with Lufthansa's aggressive European pricing, Munich punches well above its size for weekend escapes.

When to fly from Munich

Summer (Jun–Aug): Bavarian school holidays spike Mediterranean routes. But Oktoberfest isn't until September, so domestic prices are normal. Italy is quick and popular — book early.

Autumn (Sep–Nov): Oktoberfest (late Sep–early Oct) inflates INBOUND fares but outbound is unaffected. Post-Oktoberfest October is excellent for deals. Southern Europe is still warm.

Winter (Dec–Feb): Ski routes to Innsbruck and Switzerland are popular. City breaks to London, Barcelona, Lisbon are cheap. Christmas market flights to Prague and Vienna are the obvious play.

Spring (Mar–May): Easter inflates family routes. Late April and May are excellent — Italian lakes, Adriatic coast, Iberian Peninsula all at pre-summer prices.

Airport insider tip

The Bayern-Ticket (€29) covers unlimited S-Bahn travel for up to 5 people after 9am — including the airport S-Bahn. If you're a group of 3+, it's cheaper than individual tickets. Pays for itself on the airport run alone.
