Why fly from Stockholm?
Stockholm has three airports serving different markets. Arlanda (ARN) is the main hub — SAS, Norwegian, easyJet, and most international carriers operate here. Skavsta (NYO) is Ryanair's Swedish base, 100km southwest of Stockholm. Bromma (BMA) is 8km from the city centre but handles limited routes.Arlanda is 40km north of Stockholm. The Arlanda Express train takes 20 minutes (SEK 299, or SEK 149 if you book online early). Cheaper: the Flygbussarna bus takes 40 minutes for SEK 119. Even cheaper: commuter train from Uppsala direction for SEK 55 with SL card. Skavsta is served by Flygbussarna (80 min, SEK 159) — factor that into any Ryanair "deal".
Sweden's high cost of living means Stockholmers are motivated to find cheap flights elsewhere. Competition on leisure routes is fierce, especially to southern Europe. Norwegian and SAS fight for Scandinavian loyalty, and Ryanair from Skavsta undercuts everyone.
Best weekend routes from Stockholm
Barcelona, Malaga, Nice, Split — Norwegian and SAS compete May–September, often under 1000 SEK return
London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris — multiple daily options from Arlanda, under 2 hours
Kraków, Budapest, Bergamo, Eindhoven — rock-bottom prices from NYO if you don't mind the bus
Oslo (1h), Copenhagen (1h15), Helsinki (1h) — SAS and Norwegian make Nordic hopping trivially easy
When to fly from Stockholm
Summer (Jun–Aug): Midsommar (late June) and July are peak Swedish holiday. Mediterranean flights spike. Book 8+ weeks ahead. Alternatively, fly in early June before schools break up.
Autumn (Sep–Nov): Best deals from Stockholm. Temperatures drop, Swedes are back at work, and airlines slash prices to fill southbound routes. October Barcelona from 600 SEK return is realistic.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Canary Islands and Thailand are popular Swedish escapes. European city breaks (London, Berlin, Amsterdam) are dead cheap — 500 SEK return from Arlanda is common in January.
Spring (Mar–May): Sportlov (winter sport break, varies by region) inflates Alpine routes. Otherwise, spring is great value. May is ideal — warm in southern Europe, prices haven't peaked yet.

Airport insider tip
Skip the Arlanda Express if you're not in a rush. The Flygbussarna bus from Cityterminalen takes only 20 minutes longer and costs half the price. Or better: the commuter train (pendeltåg) with SL card is SEK 55 — just add the Arlanda station supplement.
