Why fly from Milan?

Milan's three airports each serve different purposes. Malpensa (MXP) is the main international hub — easyJet's Italian base, plus Ryanair, Wizz Air, and legacy carriers. Linate (LIN) is the city airport — close, convenient, mostly short-haul. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is Ryanair's Italian fortress, 50km northeast — cheapest fares, longest commute.

Malpensa is 49km northwest of Milan. The Malpensa Express train to Cadorna/Centrale takes 50 minutes (€13). Bergamo's Orio Shuttle to Milano Centrale costs €10 (60 min). Linate is just 7km from the centre — bus 73 costs €2, or metro M4 now reaches the airport directly.

The three-airport system creates intense competition. easyJet at Malpensa, Ryanair at Bergamo, and various carriers at Linate all fight for Milanese passengers. The result: some of the cheapest flights in southern Europe.

When to fly from Milan

Summer (Jun–Aug): Milanese escape to the coast and islands. Sardinia and Sicily flights spike. European city breaks stay reasonable. Bergamo flights to eastern Europe are dirt cheap all summer.

Autumn (Sep–Nov): Fashion week (Sep) inflates inbound, but outbound is fine. October is prime deal season — Barcelona and London weekends from €25 return.

Winter (Dec–Feb): Ski routes to Innsbruck and Geneva pop up. City breaks to London, Paris, Barcelona are cheapest. Milan's fog makes you want to leave — airlines know this and price accordingly.

Spring (Mar–May): Milan Design Week (April) is mostly inbound. Outbound remains cheap. May is excellent for Mediterranean weekends.

Airport insider tip

Don't automatically choose Bergamo for Ryanair. Factor in the €20 return bus and 60+ minutes each way. easyJet from Malpensa is often cheaper door-to-door, and the Malpensa Express train is more reliable than the Bergamo shuttle in traffic.
