Why fly from Madrid?
Madrid Barajas (MAD) is Spain's biggest airport and Iberia's global hub. But for weekend travellers, the story is really about three carriers: Iberia Express (Iberia's short-haul arm), Ryanair, and Vueling. Between them, they cover virtually every European city at competitive prices. The airport has four terminals. T4 and T4S are Iberia's stunning modern terminals — some of the most beautiful airport architecture in Europe. T1 handles Ryanair and other budget carriers. Getting to the city is easy: Metro Line 8 reaches Nuevos Ministerios in 15 minutes (€5 including airport supplement). The Cercanías commuter train from T4 to Atocha costs €2.60 and takes 25 minutes.
Madrid's central location in Spain means domestic flights to beach destinations (Malaga, Palma, Tenerife) are ridiculously cheap and short. But international routes are strong too — Iberia Express and Ryanair compete on routes to London, Rome, Lisbon, and Paris.
Best weekend routes from Madrid
Malaga, Palma, Tenerife, Barcelona — under €20 one-way on Iberia Express or Ryanair, flight times under 90 min
London, Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Amsterdam — multiple daily flights, strong price competition
Kraków, Porto, Marrakech, Brussels — T1 budget routes that rarely break €40 return
Lisbon (1h), Porto (1h10) — practically shuttle routes with Iberia Express, Ryanair, and TAP competing
When to fly from Madrid
Summer (Jun–Aug): Madrileños flee the 40°C heat. Beach routes (Malaga, Palma) are packed but still cheap due to frequency. International routes have decent deals as Madrid empties out.
Autumn (Sep–Nov): Excellent value. Post-summer lull. Lisbon, Porto, and London weekends from €30 return. October weather is perfect in Madrid's rival cities.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Christmas bumps prices but January is dead cheap. Canary Islands are popular winter sun escapes — Tenerife from €40 return. European city breaks hit rock bottom.
Spring (Mar–May): Semana Santa inflates domestic routes. International flights stay reasonable. May is golden — warm everywhere, prices haven't peaked. Book early for May bank holiday weekends.

Airport insider tip
If you're connecting between T1 (Ryanair) and T4 (Iberia), allow 45 minutes — it's a free shuttle bus, not a walk. T4 has better food and lounges. The Cercanías from T4 is half the price of the Metro and nearly as fast.
